Kumasi: A Methodist Bishop has urged the government to take urgent steps to ensure the enforcement of the country’s laws to curb the spate of indiscipline and lawlessness in the country. Right Reverend Sampson Obeng Adjei, Bishop of the Kumasi North Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana, pointed out that the spate of lawlessness in the country required urgent attention.
According to Ghana News Agency, he was speaking at the maiden Synod of the Diocese held at Bantama in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti region, under the theme, ‘Discipleship: Growing into Christian Maturity.’ “As a church, we cannot remain silent in the face of many troubling issues confronting our beloved country,” he stated.
Rt. Rev. Obeng Adjei listed illegal mining, commonly known as Galamsey, crime, indiscipline in the media and educational institutions, and the conflict in Bawku, as some of the pertinent issues confronting the country. He said the Galamsey menace had dire consequences for both this generation and the generation yet unborn.
He noted that the once-pristine rivers and fertile lands were being destroyed since the enforcement of the law was weak. Additionally, the rise in armed robbery and other violent crimes in various parts of the country sowed the seed of fear and despair in citizens as it shook the security in the country.
Furthermore, Rt Rev Adjei indicated that the rate of indiscipline in the media space was heart-wrecking as most activities promoted indecency, lies, disrespect in the name of freedom of speech and division. “The media, once seen as a tool for education and nation-building, is now, in some instances, being used to promote disrespect, profanity and division,” he said.
Additionally, Rt Rev Adjei expressed worry about the loss of moral guidance, breakdown of discipline and the erosion of parental and institutional control.
