Accra: Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, has applauded health workers for their efforts in managing the cholera outbreak affecting communities in the Central Region. He assured that the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) would continue their efforts to address the situation, emphasizing the importance of public participation in maintaining cleanliness.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Akandoh highlighted that cholera, linked to access to potable water and adequate sanitation, could impact anyone regardless of their status. Speaking at a stakeholder meeting at Effutu Hospital, he was briefed by facility management on the current outbreak situation and encouraged health workers to persist in their life-saving duties.
The Minister's visit included the Country Director of the World Health Organisation, Central Regional Director of Health, and officials from the Ministry of Health, who visited patients and toured areas of concern. They observed open defecation along the seashore and noted many households had toilets connected to open, silt-filled gutters.
Mr. Akandoh urged the public to change unhygienic practices, such as using refuse dump sites and beaches as places of convenience and dumping refuse in gutters and drains. He called for a collaborative effort among stakeholders to combat cholera and restore well-being in the affected communities.
