Illegal Mining Activities Devastate Aboi Nkwanta-Samreboi Road

ABOI NKWANTA: Parts of the Aboi Nkwanta-Samreboi Road in the Wassa Amenfi West Municipality have been washed away, leaving the road impassable due to the recent surge in illegal mining activities combined with a weekend rainstorm. The situation has created a critical disruption for residents and motorists in the Western Region. According to Ghana News Agency, illegal miners have been operating in the heart of the Aboi Nkwanta community, near a stream that runs alongside the road. This activity has resulted in several uncovered pits, posing significant hazards, especially during the rainy season. As a result, the road is currently blocked, forcing drivers on the Asankragwa to Aboi Nkwanta, Samreboi route to seek alternative paths via the Sureso or Wassa Dunkwa Road. Nana Gyan Manso, the Assembly Member for the Akromantu Electoral Area, stated that wooden planks have been placed to allow only motorbikes to traverse the damaged road. He noted that several homes have been submerged, leading to the displacement of residents. Manso plans to inform the National Disaster Management Organisation to address the situation, emphasizing the urgency of the matter. The Assembly Member also mentioned his intention to coordinate with the Municipal Chief Executive and the Member of Parliament for Wassa Amenfi West to initiate the reconstruction of the road promptly. He urged residents and motorists to remain patient, assuring them that steps are being taken to resolve the issue. Drivers at the Aboi Nkwanta and Samreboi Lorry Station in Asankragwa expressed concerns over the persistent illegal mining activities, despite government declarations against them. They appealed to the government and relevant stakeholders to take swift action to curb the environmental and infrastructural damage caused by these operations.
