Ankara: The Sudanese army would soon regain control of El-Fasher (western Sudan), which fell on October 27 to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Sudanese Ambassador to Tunisia, Bukhari Ghanem Mohamed, affirmed on Friday. He called on the international community to designate the RSF as a 'terrorist organisation' for committing crimes and genocide against defenceless Sudanese civilians. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, the ambassador explained that Sudanese forces were on high alert and would respond forcefully to the RSF militia, holding them accountable for their atrocities. 'These terrorists have targeted thousands of civilians,' he said, adding that more than 400 sick civilians in an El-Fasher hospital were summarily executed in a single day by RSF mercenaries. He described the army's recent withdrawal from El-Fasher as a 'tactical move' to devise a strategic plan to eliminate the remaining mercenaries. Earlier, the RSF announced that it had seized the headquarters of the army's 6th Div ision in El-Fasher, after fierce fighting and an 18-month siege. The ambassador stressed the need to 'punish all those responsible for crimes in El-Fasher, which has suffered a suffocating blockade for over 500 days,' and to end the 'ethnic cleansing campaign and summary executions' carried out by foreign-backed mercenaries using advanced weapons and combat drones. Bukhari Ghanem said the death toll 'rises daily due to the atrocities committed by the RSF,' describing the massacres and arson as 'crimes against humanity and human rights,' requiring urgent international intervention. He added that 'since the war began in 2023, more than 14,000 people have been killed,' comparing the massacres and forced displacements in El-Fasher to the 1994 Rwandan genocide. He urged the international community to take the goals of these 'outlawed militias' seriously and ensure that they do not go unpunished. The ambassador attributed the conflict in Sudan to 'foreign interference and attempts by some powers to exploit Sudan' s wealth,' stressing that Sudan is rich in oil and that efforts to divide it are driven by 'clear greed for its natural resources.' On the international response to the crimes in El-Fasher, he criticised the 'suspicious silence' of the world community, accusing it of failing to uphold its moral and security responsibilities to protect civilians. 'This inaction undermines confidence in the international security and peace system and gives violators of international law more freedom to evade punishment and continue their abuses,' he said. The diplomat also warned of a catastrophic humanitarian and security situation in El-Fasher with consequences that could extend beyond Sudan's borders and destabilise the region. Despite these hardships, he noted that Sudan has avoided famine thanks to its natural and water resources and the resilience of its people. It should be recalled that the International Crisis Group (ICG) had reported in 2024 that El-Fasher's economy had collapsed and famine was spreading. 'We refuse to negotiate with mercenaries and call on them to lay down their arms immediately,' he stated. Regarding the prospect of a resolution between the parties to the conflict and the establishment of peace, the Sudanese Ambassador to Tunisia affirmed that Sudan's position is clear in this regard, namely, its refusal to negotiate with mercenaries and outlaws. 'The only solution at present to the ongoing political crisis in the country lies in the RSF's compliance with the decisions of the Security Council, the immediate laying down of arms, and the immediate and complete cessation of all hostilities,' he stressed. Moreover, the Quartet group involved in the Sudanese crisis-which includes the United States, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates-met on September 12 in Washington for consultations aimed at finding a political solution for Sudan and implementing its peace plan, but no progress was made in this regard. This plan consists of establishing a three-month humanitarian truce, leading to a perman ent ceasefire, followed by an inclusive and transparent nine-month transition process to fulfill the aspirations of the Sudanese people for an independent civilian government. Indeed, members of the Security Council on Thursday called on the RSF to lift the siege of El-Fasher, based on Security Council Resolution 2736, which calls for an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation of tensions in and around El-Fasher. The members of the Council also condemned the atrocities committed by the RSF against civilians, including summary executions and arbitrary arrests, demanding accountability for all perpetrators of these heinous violations.
