Israeli Artillery Targets Agricultural Areas in Southwestern Syria

Quneitra: The Israeli army shelled agricultural areas in the Quneitra countryside of southwestern Syria, as reported by official media sources. The shelling took place on Tuesday, with the Israeli artillery firing three shells at farmland near the village of Taranja, located in the northern Quneitra countryside. Fortunately, there were no casualties or material damage reported from this incident.

According to Anadolu Agency, this attack followed a series of events where Israeli troops had entered the village of al-Asha in the Quneitra countryside just a day prior. In al-Asha, the troops conducted search and raid operations on several homes, escalating the tensions in the region.

These recent actions by Israel occur amidst ongoing negotiations between Syria and Israel. Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa had previously stated that while negotiations on a security agreement with Israel had not reached a complete deadlock, they were encountering difficulties. The primary issue revolves around Israel's insistence on maintaining a military presence on Syrian territory, which has been a point of contention.

The situation has been further complicated following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024. In response to this political shift, Israel declared the 1974 Disengagement Agreement void and moved to occupy the buffer zone along the frontier. Despite the new Syrian administration's lack of threats against Israel, Israeli forces have persisted in carrying out airstrikes within Syria. These strikes have resulted in civilian casualties and have targeted military sites, equipment, and ammunition, continuing the cycle of violence in the region.
