Jirapa Emphasizes Children’s Eye Health During World Sight Day Screening

Jirapa: During a recent World Sight Day event, Dr. Zakarea Al-Hassan Balure, an optometrist and manager of Bliss Eye Care, highlighted the critical importance of eye health in children's development. The event included a free eye screening for schoolchildren, revealing significant eye health issues among the participants. According to Ghana News Agency, the screening exercise was part of the Blissful Sight for Kids (BS4Ks) project, a partnership initiative with Ghana Vision. This year's theme, "Love Your Eyes," aimed to draw attention to the necessity of regular eye check-ups for children to support their overall health and educational needs. The event, held in Jirapa, saw 1,468 children and some teachers participate, with only 205 found to have normal eyesight. The results also showed that 1,182 children suffered from various pathological issues, 46 had refractive errors needing eyeglasses, and 35 were diagnosed with cataracts and glaucoma. Dr. Balure expressed concern about the prevalence of eye condition s among the children screened and attributed this to a lack of awareness and negligence on the part of some parents regarding the importance of regular eye health checks. He voiced hope that the event and similar initiatives would encourage a culture of regular eye examinations, which are crucial for early identification and treatment of eye conditions. Mr. Paul Matthias Gandaabie, the Inclusive Coordinator in Charge of Special Education at the Jirapa Municipal Education Directorate, also acknowledged the significance of the screening. He noted that while the municipality had previously held annual eye screenings with the support of various organizations, logistical challenges had prevented these from occurring over the past two years. Additionally, Mr. Gerald Kansoh, a teacher at St. Augustine's Basic School, underscored the challenges of teaching students with vision problems, emphasizing that regular screenings are essential for effective learning and teaching environments.
