TUMU: Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to express a vote of no confidence in the current NPP government, advocating for a change to enable the NDC to implement measures aimed at economic recovery and improved governance. Speaking at a rally in Tumu, Mahama criticized the NPP for failing the nation in various sectors including the economy and employment, and emphasized the need for their replacement in the upcoming 2024 general elections. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Mahama expressed his disappointment with the NPP's governance since their rise to power in 2016. He accused them of betraying the electorate's trust and emphasized that their time in office resulted in increased national debt, higher unemployment rates, and deteriorating infrastructure. "The NPP deserves to go back to opposition for the pain they inflicted on Ghanaians for them to reflect on their bad deeds so that they can be considered one day if they change," Mahama stated. During his address, Mahama highlighted the significant increase in national debt, which rose from 67% of GDP in 2017 to 104% of GDP under the NPP's leadership, with public debt surpassing GHS760 billion. He also pointed out the rise in unemployment rates from 8.4% to almost 15%, and the neglect of infrastructure projects initiated during his administration. The former president also outlined his vision for the nation's agricultural sector, promising the establishment of farmers' service centers to provide subsidized resources and revive the cotton industry in Sissala East and West. Additionally, he addressed the longstanding conflict between cattle owners and farmers, promising a resolution that would ensure peace and harmony. Mahama concluded his speech with a promise to prioritize the construction of the Tumu-Navrongo highway and consider the creation of the Sissala South District, pending an application from the Sissala Chiefs, if he were to win the presidency.
