JUSAG Condemns Attack on Journalists and Court Users in Ghana

ACCRA: The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has denounced a recent attack on journalists and court users within the Court premises, describing it as an affront to the Judiciary and the justice system as a whole. The association emphasized that attacks on press freedom pose a threat to democracy in the country. According to Ghana News Agency, JUSAG President Mr. Samuel Afotey Otu issued a statement addressing the incident, which involved journalists from EIB Network and other media outlets. On October 16, 2024, the journalists, including Legal Affairs Correspondent Mr. Murtala Inusah and Ms. Bernice Bessey, were reportedly attacked by supporters of Bishop Salifu Amoako while conducting their duties. JUSAG noted that Mr. Inusah's phone was damaged during the assault, raising concerns about the safety of court staff and users. The association expressed alarm over the growing trend of violence against individuals within court premises, labeling it as a significant concern. They condemned the attackers' actions as illegal and called for a firm response to prevent future occurrences. JUSAG urged the police to promptly arrest those responsible for the attack and ensure justice for the victims. JUSAG also recognized Mr. Inusah's dedication to journalistic ethics and professionalism, highlighting his accolade as the best court correspondent during the association's 50th Anniversary celebrations in Cape Coast on September 21, 2024. The association extended their support to the victims and called on the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) and other media organizations to take the issue seriously. The incident led two victims to file complaints at the Ministries Police Station in Accra. JUSAG reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of all individuals accessing justice at the courts and urged decisive action to address such incidents.
