Keta Surpasses Polio Vaccination Target, Achieving Over 100 Percent Coverage

KETA: The Keta Municipal Health Directorate in the Volta Region has successfully vaccinated 14,790 children against poliomyelitis, surpassing its initial target of 14,730. The vaccination campaign ran from October 17 to 20 and aimed to immunize children aged zero to five. According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Dora Kugbonu, the Public Health Promotion Officer, noted that the initiative was designed to prevent polio outbreaks in the area. "Our target was to vaccinate a total number of 14,730 children within the age range, but I can tell you that our teams have worked above our limit and expectations," she stated. The vaccination effort achieved more than 100 percent coverage, with 14,790 children vaccinated. Madam Kugbonu revealed that despite the success, about 60 children in the municipality missed the vaccination. The directorate plans to implement measures to ensure these children receive the vaccine. She attributed the campaign's success to the collaborative efforts of health workers, volunteers, teacher s, and parents. The second phase of the vaccination initiative is scheduled for November 14 to 17, targeting children under five to further strengthen their immunity against polio. Kugbonu urged the public to participate in the vaccination drive, emphasizing that polio vaccines are tested, approved, and safe. She highlighted that vaccination remains the only method to control the disease, as polio has no cure.
