Ketu South Youth Protest Over Sea Defense, Block Keta-Aflao Road

Ketu South: Some residents of Salakope, Amutinu, and Agavedzi in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region have blocked the Keta to Aflao main road to protest recent tidal wave destruction and demand expedited action from authorities.

According to Ghana News Agency, the protesters, primarily youth from the affected areas, have obstructed the road with tree stumps and rocks, causing disruptions to traffic and commerce. The tidal wave has also deposited large amounts of sand, further hindering accessibility.

Mr. Sylvanus Kumawu, the Assembly Member of Salakope, highlighted the danger the area faces, citing recent surges that severed the main part of the Keta-Aflao road. He stated that the residents are calling for immediate government action to address the tidal wave issues, including the construction of sea defense walls to prevent further destruction. The waves have caused substantial damage to properties and livelihoods, with many residents losing homes and businesses, severely impacting the local economy.

The protesters are seeking urgent relief and support from the government to prevent their communities from being washed away by the sea. Mr. Kumawu mentioned that vehicles and pedestrians have been advised to use alternative routes, affecting businesses and intensifying the protestors' determination to have their demands met. He appealed for comprehensive government plans to protect these communities and prevent further destruction.

Many residents are struggling to cope with the aftermath of the tidal wave, seeking urgent relief and support to rebuild their lives. Some protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the delay in governmental response and emphasized the need for support, including financial assistance and housing, to recover from the disaster. The sea has severed the main Keta-Aflao road at Amutsinu, necessitating urgent action from authorities to address critical challenges, including health, water, education, and housing.

The protest by the youth in Salakope, Amutinu, and Agavedzi is viewed as a call to action for authorities to tackle the tidal wave issue and support affected communities. Any further delay could lead to more destruction, affecting victims psychologically and physically, while the youth remain steadfast in continuing the protest until their demands are met.
