Kpone Youth Petition for GHs 2 Million Donation to Address Water Crisis

KPONE: The Kpone Okpokli Youth Association (KOYA) has urged the Kpone Traditional Council and Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) to allocate a GHs 2 million donation from Tema Development Corporation (TDC) Ghana Limited to resolve the community's enduring water shortage. According to Ghana News Agency, the TDC provided the funds to the traditional council during a customer week celebration, intending to support the construction of a new community center in Kpone. However, KOYA has expressed opposition to this allocation, arguing that the community's pressing need for access to potable water should take precedence. During a demonstration, members of KOYA, dressed in red, displayed placards with messages such as "Kpone needs flow of pipe-borne water," and "Use the TDC money to solve the Kpone water issue, not for the community center," to urge authorities to prioritize resolving the longstanding water scarcity. Mr. Emmanuel Clifford Anum-Doku, President of KOYA, highlighted in an interview that Kpone residents have faced water shortages for nearly two decades, forcing them to rely on costly private suppliers. He suggested that the existing recreational center project, already undertaken by the traditional council, could be completed with a portion of the funds. "There is an existing recreational centre in the building of the traditional council; they should repair and finish it; that one has to be completed before any other thing," Mr. Anum-Doku remarked, emphasizing the need to address the community's urgent needs before embarking on new projects. He noted that the water issue is impacting local businesses and called for swift measures to ensure a steady water supply, thereby enabling residents to access safe water for their daily activities.
