Bishkek: Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov has urged global leaders to support Kyrgyzstan's bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, with elections slated for June 3. Zhaparov highlighted the ongoing imbalance within the council's composition, emphasizing the need for increased participation from small, developing, and landlocked nations to strengthen the framework of collective security.
According to Anadolu Agency, Zhaparov stated that expanding genuine representation in the UN's key body is a necessity rather than a political choice. He asserted that electing Kyrgyzstan would demonstrate the international community's commitment to restoring historical justice and ensuring equal opportunities for all countries to participate in the UN's leading organ.
Zhaparov emphasized Kyrgyzstan's dedication to enhancing the Security Council's effectiveness and transparency while making significant contributions to global efforts in addressing worldwide challenges and threats. He assured that Kyrgyzstan is free from bloc commitments and geopolitical confrontations, which would enable it to maintain a balanced, independent, and pragmatic stance within the council aimed at reducing polarization and fostering dialogue.
Furthermore, Zhaparov outlined Kyrgyzstan's priorities, which include advocating for pragmatic, depoliticized, and sustainable solutions. These priorities encompass strengthening preventive diplomacy, developing mediation mechanisms, promoting nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament, and institutionalizing the connection between climate and security.
