Leaking Septic Tank Threatens Pupils’ Health at Ho Schools

According to ghana news agency:ccording to Ghana News Agency, one parent, who spoke on anonymity, lamented the lack of swift response from the relevant institutions despite repeated complaints. 'We have raised this issue several times, but it looks like no one is doing anything about it. We are worried about our children's safety,' the parent said. The incident has already been formally reported to the Municipal Environmental Health Office (MEHO), but officers are yet to act on the matter due to resource constraints. Reports indicate that the MEHO officer was invited to inspect the site but could not visit because of inadequate logistics and mobility challenges.

Health experts warn that exposure to untreated faecal matter could trigger outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever, particularly in school environments where children are most vulnerable. Parents have expressed frustration that delays in addressing the situation could have dire consequences as the rainy season increases the risk of contamination. They have therefore appealed to the Ho Municipal Chief Executive, the Municipal Environmental Health Office, the Ghana Health Service, and the Ghana Police Service to step in to avert a public health crisis.

'The authorities must act now before we start recording cases. Prevention is better than cure,' another parent emphasized. Community members fear that continued inaction may worsen the problem and erode public trust in the capacity of local institutions to safeguard health and sanitation. Stakeholders are expected to meet the owner of the apartment to take action on the issue for immediate interventions to contain the threat and protect the safety of pupils and residents in the affected area.
