Let Us Invest Massively in TVET for Sustainable Job Creation – Director.

BOLGATANGA: Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) holds immense potential for job creation and sustainable job security for the youth, asserted Mr. William Aduum, the Upper East Regional Director of Ghana TVET Service. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Aduum emphasized that the TVET sector provides practical knowledge and skills, equipping individuals to become self-employed and generate employment opportunities for others. Furthermore, TVET empowers the youth to counteract job insecurity threats posed by emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI). Speaking at the inaugural national TVET campaign in Bolgatanga, themed 'Transforming Ghana's skills: the future starts here,' Mr. Aduum advocated for increased investment in TVET institutions and the informal sector to foster self-reliance and entrepreneurship. He remarked, "We must also commit to government that we need to do a lot, we should invest a lot in the TVET landscape, and this is what will bring Ghana to the li melight." He highlighted that countries like Japan, China, Malaysia, and America have bolstered their economies through TVET activities. The Regional Director noted that research indicates AI poses a serious threat to many white-collar jobs, with many expected to lose their jobs to technology. TVET, he argued, offers the best alternative to address these potential job losses. A labor expert has predicted that in the next 20 to 30 years, due to AI, those completing traditional school systems will seek jobs from TVET graduates, underscoring the need for skill-building. He expressed satisfaction that the two major political parties, the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress, have recognized TVET's vital role in socioeconomic development and prioritized it in their 2024 manifestos. Mr. Aduum urged stakeholders to intensify efforts to demystify misconceptions about TVET and encourage students to pursue TVET courses in secondary and tertiary institutions. Mr. Zachariah Yorose, Principal of the Bolgatanga Technical Institute, noted that the originator of TVET was God, emphasizing TVET's crucial role in addressing Ghana's unemployment and building a resilient economy. He encouraged TVET students, affirming, "don't abandon your skill, you are not in the wrong place, you are at the right place of learning." Madam Diana Kwakye Ayettey, Principal of Bolgatanga Central Technical Institute, remarked that TVET is the best avenue to stimulate entrepreneurship and economic growth, urging parents to support their children in choosing TVET programs. Mr. Rex Asanga, Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, commended the Ghana TVET Service for its efforts to promote the sector for economic transformation. He noted the government's significant investment in TVET, highlighting its economic potential and commitment to strengthening TVET learning institutions across the country. In celebration of the campaign, TVET institutions and the informal sector organized activities including a cleanup exercise, float, exhibiti on, and football gala to raise awareness and dispel misconceptions about the sector.
