“Machrou Tounes is not concerned by upcoming legislative elections,” party says

Machrou Tounes movement is “not concerned by the upcoming legislative election, the party said in a statement Monday.

It noted that the promulgation, “unilaterally,” of electoral laws shortly before the elections is “not compliant with international standards.”

This attempt to discard political parties from political life will disintegrate society, as proven by comparative experiences, Machrou Tounes added.

“Ambiguous laws are a threat to freedoms, including freedom of expression,” the statement mentioned, denouncing the setback in the achievements of Tunisian women by abandoning the principle of parity for members of the Parliament.

For the party, “the new constitution does by no means allow the establishment of an effective legislative power.”
