Majority Leader Afenyo-Markin Praises PAC Chairman Avedzi for Exceptional Performance in Parliament

Accra: Mr Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, has praised Dr James Klutse Avedzi, the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), for his exceptional performance in overseeing the committee's operations. This commendation was part of Mr Afenyo-Markin's welcome address as Parliament resumed from its recess. According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Avedzi's leadership has significantly contributed to the PAC's success in scrutinizing the public accounts of State Agencies. "The Public Accounts Committee, led by its able and industrious Chairman, the Honourable James Klutse Avedzi, has been relentless in fulfilling its mandate," he stated during the session on Tuesday, October 15. The Majority Leader highlighted the crucial role that Members of Parliament play in national governance, especially as the country approaches another general election on December 7. He stressed the importance of their commitment to their duties despite the demanding natu re of their roles. "The enormous strain on our resources, time, and the sacrifices some of us have to make during this period are not for the faint-hearted," he remarked. During the recess, Mr Afenyo-Markin noted that several other committees, including the Committee on Government Assurances and the Appointments Committee, were actively engaged. The latter was particularly busy with the vetting of the President's nominees to the Supreme Court. With the country gearing up for the upcoming election, the Majority Leader acknowledged the pressure on MPs to balance their campaign activities with legislative responsibilities. He expressed his gratitude towards his colleagues for their dedication and attendance during this critical legislative period. The session is set to address numerous key legislative items, including several significant bills like the Environmental Protection Agency Bill, 2024; the Social Protection Bill, 2023; and the Customs (Amendment) Bill, 2024. Other important measures such as the Budg et Bill, 2023; the Ghana Boundary Commission Bill, 2023; and the Intestate Succession Bill, 2022, are also scheduled for consideration before the next recess.
