ACCRA: A 32-year-old unemployed man, Derick Squire, was remanded for a week by an Accra Circuit Court on charges of causing harm, leading to an emotional breakdown in the courtroom. Squire, who pleaded not guilty, was detained by the court amid ongoing investigations into the incident, despite his emotional appeal for bail. According to Ghana News Agency, Squire, during the court proceedings, denied allegations of being a land guard and insisted on his innocence regarding the charge. He expressed his willingness to attend court sessions if granted bail. Despite his plea, the presiding judge, Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah, upheld the decision to keep him in police custody, denying the bail application submitted by Squire's counsel. Chief Inspector Daniel Danku, representing the prosecution, requested the remand to facilitate further investigations. The incident in question occurred on October 6, 2024, when Squire allegedly attacked a student, Michael Adam, in La. The prosecution alleged that Squire and his associ ates had been smoking substances suspected to be Indian hemp before engaging in a card game, which escalated into violence. Squire is accused of hitting Adam on the head with a stick, leaving him unconscious and injured. The court was informed that Adam, along with his family, reported the incident to the Accra Regional Police Command on October 14, 2024, leading to Squire's arrest. In his caution statement, Squire reportedly admitted to the attack, attributing his actions to being under the influence of drugs. The prosecution also pointed to Squire's alleged history of being a notorious land guard in the Labadi area, contributing to the court's decision to deny bail.
