Minority Criticizes Roads Minister Over Alleged Distortion of Road Construction Data

Accra: Mr. Francis Asenso-Boakye, a former Minister of Roads and Highways, has voiced criticism against the current administration, accusing them of distorting facts and data regarding the roads constructed by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Asenso-Boakye stated that the NPP government had constructed over 13,000 kilometers of roads, which included overlays, new and partial roads, as well as gravelling, regravelling, and rehabilitation works. This figure contradicts the claim made by Mr. Kwame Agbodza, the current Minister of Roads and Highways, who stated that only 10,000 kilometers were constructed.

Mr. Asenso-Boakye addressed a press conference at Parliament House in Accra, responding to the Roads Minister's statements. He described the comments as misleading and indicative of a pattern of deliberate distortion. He emphasized that the data on road construction was compiled by the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit of the sector Ministry, comprising qualified engineers and civil servants, not politicians.

The former minister urged the current Roads Minister to confront the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit directly rather than engaging in what he termed as 'cheap political propaganda' to undermine the legacy of President Akufo-Addo. He also expressed surprise at the current Minister's endorsement of the single sourcing procurement method for road construction, a practice previously criticized by the NPP administration.

Mr. Asenso-Boakye highlighted the inconsistency in the current Minister's stance, describing it as a contradiction that questions his integrity. He noted the importance of maintaining consistency in policy application, regardless of political affiliation, to ensure transparency and integrity in government operations.
