Takoradi: The MTN Foundation has announced the launch of a smart farming programme aimed at creating jobs and reducing unemployment among the youth. Mrs. Adjoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, revealed this initiative during a media and stakeholder forum in Takoradi, part of MTN's 2025 engagement series for the Western Region.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Foundation has partnered with the University of Ghana's Faculty of Agriculture to establish a Vegetable Centre of Excellence. This facility includes greenhouses, digital irrigation, and solar power systems. The programme is designed to introduce students and interested non-students to modern agricultural techniques, particularly in vegetable cultivation.
Mrs. Wiafe disclosed that the programme currently involves about 50 students from the University and is also being piloted in Tamale. She highlighted the importance of strategically using scarce land resources to maximize agricultural production while maintaining environmental sustainability. The Foundation plans to expand the project after evaluating the pilot phase later this year.
During the forum, Mr. Desmond Cudjoe, Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Western Regional Chapter, commended MTN for its previous efforts in training media practitioners on digital platforms and storytelling. He encouraged MTN to continue such initiatives and called on other corporate organizations to follow suit.
