CAPE COAST: MTN Ghana, a leading telecommunications provider, has attributed the recent disruptions in call and internet services to fibre cuts, primarily caused by the activities of road contractors and property developers. The company highlighted the persistent damage to fibre optic cables, a critical infrastructure, despite ongoing efforts to engage with relevant associations. According to Ghana News Agency, MTN subscribers have expressed frustration over frequent network issues, which complicate making calls, accessing the internet, or maintaining clear communication. Mr. Teddy Hayford Acquah, the South West Technical Manager of MTN, elaborated at a media and stakeholder forum in Cape Coast, noting that 70 to 80 percent of the disruptions were related to fibre damage. Additionally, thefts at cell sites, involving batteries, fuel, and other components, contribute to the network challenges. Mr. Acquah disclosed that 62 kilometers of MTN's 600-kilometer fibre network in the Central Region had been damaged this year, incurring a cost of five million Cedis for repairs. He explained that service outages occur if alternative routes are unavailable, despite MTN's investments in redundancies across various locations, including Cape Coast, Takoradi, Yamoransa, and others. The dualisation project in Kasoa, a water pipe project at Bobikuma, and developments along the Agona Swedru route have been particularly detrimental to the cables. Mr. Acquah cautioned that fibre optic cables are now considered national security infrastructure and called for public cooperation in safeguarding them. He underscored the cables' significance in supporting the Internet of Things, 5G networks, and other advanced technologies. MTN plans to expand its fibre network by an additional 28 kilometers in the Central Region by November. Madam Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, reiterated MTN's commitment to Ghana's economic progress, mentioning that the company has paid about GHS5.9 million in taxes in 2023 . She also highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance coverage and support initiatives in health, education, and economic empowerment. Meanwhile, Mr. David Woasey, Area Sales Manager, advised the public to guard against Mobile Money fraud. He emphasized the necessity for customers to conduct transactions personally and keep PIN codes confidential to prevent theft.
