Yamfo: Some young and aged women at Yamfo, a mining community in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region, have been freely screened for breast cancer to enable them to know their status. The Newmont Ahafo North Mine at Kenyasi in the Asutifi North District sponsored the breast screening exercise conducted by the Yamfo Health Centre to mark this year's Breast Cancer Campaign Week. According to Ghana News Agency, about 200 women benefited from the screening exercise and were also sensitized and counseled on the need to take good care of their breasts. In an interview, Dr. Solomon Owiredu Boateng, the Medical Superintendent at the Yamfo Health Centre, emphasized that while breast cancer could be hereditary, women should take proper care to avoid exposure to the disease. Dr. Boateng highlighted that early detection of breast cancer could lead to effective treatment or management and advised women to report any abnormalities to health facilities for examination. He dismissed myths linking breast cancer t o family curses or wizardry and urged caregivers and families to support patients in seeking hospital treatment rather than relying on prayers and herbal remedies. Dr. Boateng warned that unproven and herbal medicines often worsen patients' conditions, leading to various health complications. He noted that wrong perceptions and unfounded societal myths associated with breast cancer fueled stigmatization and discrimination. He called on stakeholders to proactively tackle these myths and misconceptions. Mr. Samuel Osei, the External Relations Manager of the Newmont Ahafo North Mine and Newmont Ahafo South Project, stated that the breast screening exercise was Newmont's contribution to intensifying the breast cancer campaign in the area.
