NGO Launches WASH Facilities to Combat Skin Diseases in Okere District

Metta: Water in Africa Through Everyday Responsibilities (WATER), a non-profit organization, has recently equipped 15 households in Metta, a farming community within the Okere district, with micro-flush bio-digester toilets. This initiative is part of a broader effort to eradicate Skin-Neglected Tropical Diseases (Skin-NTDs) such as Buruli ulcer and Yaws in the region, with support from ANESVAD. According to Ghana News Agency, the project aligns with WATER's commitment to enhance Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) conditions in Akuapem North and Okere districts. The objective is to halt practices like open defecation which are linked to the spread of Skin-NTDs. Additionally, the project includes repairing over 15 broken boreholes to ensure access to clean drinking water, integral to preventing these diseases. Mr. Aboagye Afosa, Executive Director of WATER, emphasized the importance of WASH facilities in combating Skin-NTDs during a ceremony to hand over the facilities. He stated that improving sanitation and access to clean water are central to the project's goals. The households contributed to the construction by digging septic tanks, while funding for the materials was fully covered by the project. Mr. Afosa also encouraged the beneficiaries to maintain the facilities diligently, ensuring their longevity and effectiveness in serving the community's needs. Madam Juliana Asamoah, the district's disease control officer and NTDs coordinator, expressed concerns over the increasing cases of NTDs in the area. She is hopeful that the interventions from this project will significantly mitigate the health challenges faced by the community.
