TALENSI: The Widows and Orphans Movement (WOM), a gender-focused Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) with support from ActionAid Ghana, has inspired students of four schools in the Talensi and Nabdam Districts, to explore career paths with insights from industry professionals. The beneficiary schools included Dapoore and Kulpeliga Primary and Junior High Schools in the Talensi District, and Kotintabig and Nyogbare Primary and Junior High Schools in the Nabdam District. According to Ghana News Agency, the career day, organised in the various schools, featured a series of activities, including drama and poetry recitals with professionals from various fields, including the Ghana Health Service, security services, and the fashion industry, interacting with the pupils on their personal experiences. Ms Nancy Awinbisa Amiziah, the Project Officer at WOM, indicated that the career day activity formed part of the organisation's effort in the educational sector, as one of its thematic areas in supporting pupils, esp ecially orphans, to stay in school. Ms Amiziah stated, "The reason why we are doing this career day is to motivate the students to stay in school and bring professionals that they are not familiar with, to share their stories of how they struggled and how they overcame the challenges that they faced into becoming who they are today." She emphasized that this initiative would not only motivate the students to stay in school but also inspire those who may be facing challenges to persevere, as they would learn that they could overcome such challenges to become the professionals they aspire to be. Dr Umu-Hera Kanyan Kassim, a Medical Officer at the Upper East Regional Hospital, shared her personal experiences of how she hawked on the streets of Accra to support herself, urging the students to study hard. She assured them that there were organisations ready to support brilliant but needy students, sharing that she personally benefitted from a scholarship throughout her education. Mr Dennis Akurubire Adoleyine, the Secretary of the Upper East Regional branch of the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association, encouraged the students to commit to their books and choose career paths they were comfortable with and capable of succeeding in, rather than rushing into courses they had no passion for. Master Benjamin Alibo, an orphan and a form three student at the Dapoore JHS, expressed his desire to become an Architect, stating that the stories shared by the various professionals had inspired him to study hard and strive for success through determination and hard work. Mr Mohammed Abdallah, the Head Teacher of the Dapoore Primary School, thanked the organisation for the event, emphasizing that it had motivated the students to pay keen attention, which would positively impact their academics.
