Accra: Nkwanta South Drivers Union, which includes members from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport operators, have not implemented the announced reduction of transport fares.
According to Ghana News Agency, a 15 percent reduction in transport fares was supposed to take effect on May 24, 2025, due to a decline in fuel prices and the appreciation of the Cedi. However, the Unions have not applied the new fare rates. Mr. Safianu Muniru, Chairman of the Nkwanta South GPRTU, stated that the Union is evaluating several factors, such as the cost of spare parts, before deciding on the reduction.
Mr. Muniru also mentioned that the new fare will be communicated to various drivers before the end of the day. The lack of implementation has led to confusion among passengers, as some transport operators continue to charge old fares while others have adopted the new rates.
The resistance underscores persistent challenges within the transportation sector, leaving commuters uncertain about what to expect.
