Parents Encouraged to Weigh Children Beyond Age Three for Better Health Monitoring

Accra: Dr Maame Yaa Nhyira Essel, the Ga East Municipal Health Director, has urged parents to continue taking their children for regular weighing even beyond three years of age to ensure proper growth monitoring. She emphasized that continued weight checks are crucial for early detection of potential health issues and ensuring appropriate weight gain until the age of five. According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Essel made this call at the launch of the 2025 Child Health Promotion Week, organized by the Ga East Municipal Health Directorate. The event, themed 'Every Child Deserves a Healthy Future; Invest in Your Child. Attend Weighing Regularly,' highlighted concerns about parents stopping weighing sessions once their children turn three, hindering effective child development monitoring. Dr Essel also addressed misconceptions about vaccines, noting that they negatively impact child health outcomes. Hajia Barikisu Haruna Zakaria, the Ga East Municipal Nutrition Officer, emphasized the importance of proper nutriti on in the first five years of life, stating that it is crucial to a child's overall health and well-being. She highlighted that a nutrient-dense diet supports healthy brain development and strengthens the immune system, while malnutrition could lead to developmental delays and learning difficulties. She encouraged parents to attend weighing sessions for nutrition counselling and early detection of health concerns. The 2025 Child Health Promotion Week, organized in partnership with Arisefoods Limited, commenced on May 12 and will conclude on May 16. Activities for the week include a health walk, durbar, food demonstrations, free IUD insertions at Taifa Polyclinic, Abokobi, and Boi Health Centres, a Vitamin A campaign in selected schools, and an Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) mop-up in all sub-municipals. Dr Nana Achiaa Ankrah, the CEO of Arisefoods Limited, commended the Health Directorate for the initiative aimed at ensuring optimal growth and development of under-five children. She stated that he r company's mission aligns with the campaign by focusing on providing nutritious, locally produced foods. Dr Ankrah also encouraged mothers to consider their range of complementary food products to boost babies' nutritional needs after the exclusive breastfeeding period.
