Parliament Urged to Pass Anti-Gay Bill Into Law

Accra: Parliament has been urged to take urgent steps to pass the anti-gay Bill into law. Apostle Joseph Mensah, General Overseer of Christ Resurrection Church, emphasized the nation's anticipation for swift legislative action during a speech at the church's 40th anniversary celebration in Kotei, Oforikrom Municipality.

According to Ghana News Agency, the controversial anti-LGBTQ Bill was initially introduced as a private member's Bill after failing to receive the executive endorsement from the previous administration. The Bill, which prescribes varying jail terms for those identifying as gay and for its promoters, was withdrawn alongside other pending legislation following the dissolution of the previous parliament. Former President Nana Akufo-Addo had refrained from signing it into law, citing legal challenges.

Apostle Mensah underscored the importance of sustained advocacy from the Christian community to ensure the Bill's passage and subsequent presidential assent. He reiterated his opposition to homosexuality, aligning his views with Ghana's cultural and societal norms, as well as the predominant religious stances in the country.

The church's 40th anniversary served to highlight its contributions over the years, including welfare improvements for members and support for needy students in its surrounding communities.
