Accra: Members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources convened a crucial meeting with the Youth Empowerment Agency (YEA) on Tuesday, May 13, to discuss the Agency's sanitation contract issues with various Assemblies across the country. The meeting aimed to address the ongoing challenges related to sanitation management and contractual agreements impacting Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. John Oti Bless, the Chairman of the Committee and Member of Parliament for Nkwanta North, informed the media after the meeting at Parliament House in Accra. He stated that the Committee would submit a comprehensive report to Parliament upon resumption from recess on May 27. This report will focus on the sanitation challenges facing the MMDAs and propose potential solutions.
The Committee bears the responsibility of examining matters related to sanitation and water resources, including investigating and inquiring into the activities and administration of relevant ministries, departments, and agencies. Recently, the Committee's interest in sanitation matters and contracts at various Assemblies has intensified, particularly following social media reports about low wages for janitors engaged by Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies. This situation arose from a contract Zoomlion secured from the YEA.
Renowned investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni recently urged the government not to renew its contract with Zoomlion, accusing the company of exploiting its workers under the sanitation model. The journalist also alleged that Zoomlion failed to comply with the terms of the contract with the Youth Empowerment Agency.
