ACCRA: The Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union has raised alarms over repeated unprovoked attacks on its members by police escort riders, urging immediate intervention from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akufo Dampare. The union highlighted recent incidents, including the smashing of windscreens and injuries to drivers, as critical issues that require urgent attention to prevent further escalation. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Sambian Edmund Baba, the Ashanti Regional Chairperson of the Tanker Drivers Union, emphasized the dangers posed by such attacks during an interview. He explained that the nature of the hazardous loads carried by the tankers does not permit sudden stops, making it unsafe for drivers to comply with demands to stop for convoys. Mr. Baba called for understanding from police outriders, stressing that safety cannot be compromised. A specific incident on October 16, 2024, exemplifies the union's concerns. A Bulk Road Vehicle loaded with 54,000 liters of diesel , traveling from Tema to the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation depot in Kumasi, had its windscreen smashed by a police dispatch rider at Kwahu Hwidiem. The rider allegedly hit the vehicle with a stone for not yielding to a ministerial convoy. The driver suffered injuries, with blood reportedly staining his face. The union reported this as one of four recent attacks, warning that such incidents could lead to severe accidents. Mr. Baba underscored the gravity of the situation, stating that the injury could have been more severe if the stone had struck the driver's eyes while in motion. He argued that such actions by law enforcement officers are unacceptable and threatened potential self-defense measures if the IGP fails to address the issue immediately.
