ACCRA: Plan International Ghana, in collaboration with several partners, has successfully trained 118 girls from various regions in Ghana in robotics, coding, and programming as part of the "She Leads" project. This initiative, which included a five-day boot camp in Accra, aimed to boost the girls' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and also celebrated this year's UN International Day for the Girl Child. According to Ghana News Agency, the training involved girls from Senior and Junior High Schools across the North East, Upper West, Central, Ashanti, Volta, and Greater Accra regions. The program not only focused on technical skills but also leadership and personal development, including courtesy behaviors. Joyce Obenewaa Darko, the Project Manager for the She Leads Project, explained that the initiative aimed to reverse the trend of girls shying away from STEM subjects by providing them with hands-on experience. The boot camp also offered mentorship sessions with influentia l women in STEM fields, who shared insights and resources to aid the girls' learning. This exposure has reportedly started to shift the participants' career aspirations towards more STEM-related fields, with some expressing desires to become engineers and pilots. Lydia Owusua Agyakwa, Country Network Coordinator for the She Leads Project at Defence for Children, highlighted the transformative impact of the camp, noting the change in participants' perceptions of STEM. She emphasized the positive feedback from schools involved in previous sessions, which reported a significant improvement in their students' attitudes and knowledge. Participants shared their personal growth stories, with Gabriella Mensah from Mfantsiman Girls Senior High School aspiring to be a mechanical engineer after learning about robotics and programming at the camp. Deborah Amenuvoh, another participant, expressed her newfound confidence and determination to influence her peers positively. Plan International Ghana organized this initiat ive with the support of the She Leads Consortium and other local partners such as Songtaba, Erudite Women Empowerment Foundation, Rights and Responsibilities Initiatives, Hope for Future Generations, and the Women Aspire Network.
