Accra: A 30-year-old woman who allegedly poured a substance suspected to be acid on her taxi driver ex-boyfriend has been arrested by the Tesano Divisional Police Command. Mavis Nkrumah, unemployed, attempted to flee Ghana but was intercepted and taken into custody. The incident reportedly occurred when she visited her ex-lover to confirm their breakup, leading to the attack on Gideon Frimpong.
According to Ghana News Agency, Superintendent of Police Julianna Obeng, Head of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command’s Public Affairs Unit, provided details in a news brief. ‘The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested Mavis Nkrumah, a 30-year-old woman, for allegedly pouring a liquid substance suspected to be acid on her ex-boyfriend at Ablekuma Fan Milk, a suburb of Accra.’
Superintendent Obeng stated that the preliminary investigation suggested that Mavis appeared unannounced at the victim’s residence on the night of the attack, May 28, 2025, at approximately 0100 hours. Frimpong, the 29-year-old taxi driver, engaged her in a brief conversation and agreed to drive her home.
Upon reaching a rough section of the road, Frimpong requested Mavis to alight. It was then that Mavis questioned him about their relationship. After confirming their breakup for the third time, she exited the vehicle and poured the substance suspected to be acid on him through the driver’s side window.
The victim, Frimpong, was identified by passersby and rushed to the hospital for treatment of injuries to his back, neck, and other parts of his body. He has since been discharged. Mavis fled the scene but was arrested on June 3, 2025, while attempting to cross into a neighboring country.
Superintendent Obeng urged the public to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes, warning that acts of violence are criminal and will be pursued by the law. The Accra Regional Police Command remains committed to public safety and encourages reporting suspicious or harmful behavior to nearby police stations.
