Police Withdraw Charges Against Independent Candidate in Madina Constituency

MADINA: Charges against Awal Mohammed, an independent candidate for the Madina Constituency who was reportedly featured on campaign posters alongside John Mahama, have been dropped by the Adentan Circuit Court following the withdrawal of the case by the police. According to Ghana News Agency, the withdrawal and subsequent discharge of Mohammed were prompted after the complaint was raised by Abdul Razak Hussein, the Madina Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Mohammed had been facing charges of offensive conduct related to breaches of peace, to which he had pleaded not guilty before the presiding judge, Mrs. Sedinam Awo Kwadam. Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, the prosecutor in the case, explained to the court that the complainant, Abdul Razak Hussein, held a key position within the NDC as the Madina Constituency Secretary. The court was informed that Mohammed, once a member of the NDC, had chosen to run as an independent candidate during the nomination period organized by the Elec toral Commission for parliamentary candidates. The prosecution further detailed that Hussein had received multiple complaints from party members regarding Mohammed's actions. These complaints centered on allegations that Mohammed had been deploying posters that included images of himself next to John Mahama, the NDC's presidential candidate, across prominent locations within the constituency. The situation reportedly caused concern among party members, particularly the youth, who feared that the visuals of the presidential candidate alongside an independent candidate could potentially disrupt the peace in the area. The prosecution noted that in response to the filed complaint, the police had summoned Mohammed to provide a caution statement. While Mohammed denied responsibility for the posters, he did acknowledge using the name of the NDC flag bearer during his campaign activities.
