President Mahama Suspends Chief Justice Over Petitions

Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. In a news statement issued by the Presidency, it was announced that President John Dramani Mahama, in accordance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, has determined that a prima facie case has been established in respect of three petitions against the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

According to Ghana News Agency, the President has consequently established a committee in compliance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State. The committee is tasked with inquiring into the petitions referred to them and comprises Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Justice of the Supreme Court, as Chairman; Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, Justice of the Supreme Court, as a member; Daniel Yaw Domelevo, former Auditor-General, as a member; Major Flora Bazaanura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces as a member; and Professor James Sefah Dzisah, Associate Professor at the University of Ghana, as a member.

Pursuant to Article 146(10) of the Constitution and following the advice of the Council of State, President Mahama has, by a warrant, suspended the Chief Justice with immediate effect pending the outcome of the committee's proceedings.
