Prime Minister Sarra Zaafrani Zenzri Prioritizes Water System Governance at Cabinet Meeting

Kasbah: Prime Minister Sarra Zaafrani Zenzri emphasized the critical importance of water system governance during a small cabinet meeting at the Government Palace. She underscored that reforming the water sector is a top national priority guided by the directives of the President of the Republic. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, Zenzri highlighted the constitutional right to equal access to drinking water for all citizens and the necessity of preserving water resources to ensure water security for future generations. A statement from the Prime Ministry reinforced the strategic importance of this initiative for national and food security, especially amid global climate challenges. Efforts are underway to develop legislation for better management and protection of water resources. The state is committed to maintaining water facilities to guarantee a consistent supply of drinking water and prevent sudden shortages. Zenzri outlined plans to diversify water sources through non-conventional methods and major public projects. These include developing water transfer infrastructure, enhancing distribution networks, and improving sanitation services. A focus on alternative energies aims to reduce the costs of producing and transporting drinking water. Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries Ezzeddine Ben Cheikh and Secretary of State Hamadi Habaieb presented an in-depth analysis of current water resources, dam reserves, and future programs. The emergency programme for summer drinking water supply features 81 projects, with a budget of 58 million dinars, including drilling deep wells, renewing networks, and establishing central working teams for continuous supply monitoring. The program also aims to complete 187 water systems benefiting 248,000 residents, improve existing systems, and develop infrastructure for rugged areas. Plans for irrigation include rationalizing water usage and strategic programs based on a water study extending to 2050, with a focus on non-conventional water resource valor ization. Key strategies involve renewable energy adoption to manage production costs and innovative technologies for water resource management, including a digital platform for real-time hydrological data. Measures to simplify groundwater permit processes aim to encourage transparency and investment. The meeting also addressed updating bioclimatic zones and agricultural mapping to optimize crop placement and reduce evaporation. A pilot project involving water bodies and photovoltaic panels is set to begin in Tunisia's Water Technology Centre. The cabinet adopted multiple measures to implement these water management strategies, reflecting the state's commitment to ensuring sustainable water governance.
