Accra: Professor Goski Alabi, President of Laweh University, has called on Ghanaian business owners to learn the Chinese language to improve bilateral trade relations between Ghana and China. Speaking at the inauguration of the Laweh University College and Shanghai Open University Chinese Language Centre, Professor Alabi highlighted the growing business interests of Chinese nationals in Ghana and the importance of language proficiency in enhancing trade partnerships. According to Ghana News Agency, the event marked a significant step in promoting the study of Chinese language and culture within the country. The launch was attended by dignitaries from Laweh University, the Consulate of China, and representatives from Shanghai Open University, including ZHANG Jin, Vice President; WENG Zhuhua, Dean of the Institute of International Exchange; and CHEN Henan, Director of the Department of Foreign Languages. Professor Alabi emphasized that with China as Ghana's largest trade partner and a global economic powerhou se, the ability to speak Chinese offers Ghanaian businesses a competitive edge. "Understanding Chinese will facilitate smoother trade negotiations and partnerships," she explained. "We are living in a globalized world, and it's crucial for Ghanaian businesses to adopt a global mindset." The new Chinese Language Centre aims to provide valuable language skills to students, business owners, and employees of Chinese-owned companies in Ghana, opening doors to educational and professional opportunities in China. The trade relationship between Ghana and China has seen substantial growth, with China exporting goods worth $7.91 billion to Ghana and Ghana exporting $2.01 billion worth of products to China in 2022. ZHANG Jin from Shanghai Open University pointed out that establishing overseas language centers is vital for fostering cultural exchanges between China and Africa. Both educational institutions share a philosophy of providing flexible education through technology, which is expected to benefit the program pa rticipants greatly.
