Providing Practical Election Experience for Students Deemed Crucial by ASSI Board

TEMA: The Board Chairman of Angel Specialist School International (ASSI), Mr. Edusei Derkyi, has emphasized the importance of providing students with practical experience in the electoral process to prepare them for their future voting responsibilities. Mr. Derkyi highlighted this during an election event for student prefects at the school, located in Tema Community 12, stressing that such initiatives equip young people with the knowledge needed for informed decision-making as adults. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Derkyi advocated for the incorporation of civic education into the core curriculum, suggesting that schools could also integrate it into co-curricular activities to offer students experiential learning opportunities. He noted that early exposure to the electoral process fosters the right mindset about elections among future voters and leaders. The students at ASSI engaged in a comprehensive election simulation, complete with campaign posters, manifestos, and campaign managers, mirroring the n ational electoral process. Mr. Derkyi encouraged politicians and the electorate to emulate the students' spirit of patriotism, which was evident in their incident-free campaign and voting process. He emphasized that elections should not be perceived as conflicts but as democratic exercises where differing ideas are respected, and the majority's decision is accepted. Mr. George Kwesi Dzarkpasu, a teacher serving as the internal electoral commissioner, collaborated with the Tema Metro Office of the Electoral Commission of Ghana to ensure a smooth voting process. A total of 355 primary students and 200 secondary students participated, casting their ballots to elect prefects from a pool of contestants. Mr. Dzarkpasu expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the election, reiterating that elections are platforms for idea exchange and not conflict. Newly elected prefects Miss Ewurabena Darkua Ayiah and Miss Ella Owusu shared their commitment to addressing student concerns and fulfilling campaign promis es. Miss Ayiah plans to secure corporate sponsorship for additional school resources, while Miss Owusu aims to tackle challenges faced by the student body.
