Kumasi: The Ashanti Regional office of the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC) has intensified its efforts to raise public awareness about its mandate in the Kumasi Metropolis. The aim is to educate the public on the roles and responsibilities of the PURC as a utility regulator and to bridge the gap between the commission and utility consumers.
According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative also seeks to strengthen the relationship between the PURC and the public, acting as a mouthpiece for consumers in resolving issues with utility companies amicably. One of the awareness exercises was held at the Bantama Adventist Church, attracting participants from surrounding communities. The commission also engaged with market women and traders in other markets, including the Asafo market.
Mr. Edward Boduah, Ashanti Regional Manager of PURC, emphasized that the engagement would increase the commission’s visibility and promote a culture of compliance and responsible utility usage. Participants were equipped with knowledge to make informed decisions about their utility usage. He advised the public to pay utility bills promptly and avoid illegal connections, which could result in legal action.
Mr. Boduah urged the public to be vigilant against illegal activities such as cable theft. He disclosed that the commission recently retrieved GHS 262,558.53 as refunds for consumers and pledged the commission’s commitment to ensuring that the public enjoys using electricity and water peacefully. The PURC office remains ready to receive and assist consumers in addressing their concerns.
