ReDIAL Project Bolsters Ghana’s Agricultural Sector with Financial Support to Farmers

ACCRA: The Research for Development and Innovation Agriculture and Learning (ReDIAL) project has made notable strides in Ghana's agricultural sector by providing financial assistance and innovative support to smallholder farmers. The initiative, part of a European Union-funded program, has benefitted over 11,000 farmers, including 581 directly impacted by the creation of Village Savings and Loans Associations, according to a statement by Brian Acheampong, Ghana's Minister of Food and Agriculture. According to Ghana News Agency, Minister Acheampong highlighted the significant contributions of ReDIAL during a speech at the project's close-out workshop. With a focus on smallholder farmers who contribute approximately 80 percent of the country's agricultural production, the project has facilitated access to essential services and resources. The initiative offers financial assistance at a 5 percent interest rate, aligning with the Ministry's input credit system, which allows farmers to procure necessary inputs an d repay at zero interest. The Head of Cooperation at the European Union, Massimo Mina, expressed the EU's commitment to partnering with Ghana to ensure food security. ReDIAL, funded under the EU's Climate-relevant Development Smart Innovation through Research in Agriculture and food systems (DeSIRA), aims to transform agriculture and food systems in Ghana through innovative technologies and stakeholder collaboration. The project has been instrumental in promoting climate-resilient agriculture practices and improving soil fertility, targeting about 10,000 farmers, with a focus on women and those with physical disabilities. Implemented in five districts across Ghana, ReDIAL is a collaboration between Friends of the Nation, Tropenbos Ghana, and the Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, supported by private companies SAYeTECH and SESI Technologies.
