Russia Warns Trump Against Resuming Nuclear Weapons Testing

Accra: Russia has issued a warning that it might resume its own nuclear weapons testing in response to US President Donald Trump's announcement of plans to restart such tests for the first time in over three decades.

According to Ghana News Agency, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that he hopes Trump has been accurately informed about Russia's recent tests, which were not nuclear in nature. Peskov also mentioned that Russia is open to continuing nuclear disarmament talks with the United States, although Trump has yet to respond to these proposals.

Trump, in a post on Truth Social on Thursday, declared the immediate commencement of new nuclear weapons tests, citing the testing programs of other countries as justification. However, the specifics regarding the types of tests and the weapons to be tested remain unspecified. The last US tests of this nature took place in the 1990s.

Peskov expressed surprise, saying, "Until now, we were not aware that anyone was conducting tests," and clarified that if Trump's announcement referred to the testing of the 'Burevestnik,' it was definitely not a nuclear test. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently confirmed successful tests of the Burevestnik, a long-range nuclear-powered missile, though these tests did not involve nuclear warheads.

Peskov reiterated that while all countries are developing their defense systems, these do not constitute nuclear tests. He acknowledged the US's right to conduct such tests as a sovereign nation but reminded of Putin's earlier warnings that Russia would respond similarly if the US proceeded with nuclear testing.

In 2023, Putin withdrew Russia's ratification of a global nuclear test ban, though Russia continues to participate in the international monitoring of the agreement.
