Tunis: A small cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Kamel Madouri on Tuesday addressed several pressing issues concerning the health sector and health care. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, the Cabinet approved nine urgent decisions. These include an immediate increase in financial resources for Tunisia's Central Pharmacy through additional funds and monthly transfers from the National Health Insurance Fund. Additionally, measures were put in place to ensure the deduction and transfer of outstanding Social Fund contributions to specific public bodies, facilitating payments to the Central Pharmacy and public health bodies. The Cabinet also adopted mechanisms to improve the governance and management of the pharmaceutical system and emphasized the need for strengthened coordination between the Ministry of Health and the National Health Insurance Fund. This coordination aims to develop conditions and procedures for health service provision in line with international standards. Moreover, a unified committee will be established to regularly set medicine prices under the supervision of the National Agency for Medicines and Health Materials, involving the relevant ministries. There will also be a comprehensive review of the health insurance system, incorporating evaluation studies and stakeholder input. A steering committee is to be formed, comprising representatives from various ministries and health professionals. This committee will work on enhancing the appeal of public health structures, optimizing medical skills and equipment use, and ensuring decent working conditions for medical personnel to maintain the authority of the public sector. The meeting also highlighted the need for ongoing governance improvements, digital transformation, intensified monitoring, and enhanced efficiency within public health structures. Additionally, there is an accelerated push for the draft order on electronic data exchange between the National Health Insurance Fund and health care providers to be completed, with cond itions set for the widespread adoption of electronic treatment cards. Prime Minister Madouri emphasized the importance of implementing constitutional provisions related to the right to health, safety, quality treatment services, and social protection. The aim is to achieve universal health coverage for all Tunisians and a comprehensive overhaul of the health insurance system, ensuring equitable access to quality treatment, financial sustainability, and integration between public and private health sectors. Attendees of the meeting included Minister of Health Mustapha Ferjani, Minister of Finance Sihem Boughdiri Nemsia, Minister of Social Affairs Issam Lahmar, Minister of Trade and Export Development Samir Abid, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Mondher Belaid, and Secretary of State to the Minister of Industry, Energy and Mines in charge of Energy Transition Wael Chouchane.
