Students Urged to Resist Vote Buying and Avoid Violence in Upcoming Ghana Elections

GAMBAGA: Mr. Wilberforce Zangina, the North East Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has emphasized the importance of peaceful conduct and resistance to corruption among students in anticipation of the December 7, 2024, general elections in Ghana. Addressing students at the Gambaga College of Education, Zangina highlighted the critical role of youth in maintaining democratic integrity and peace during the electoral process. According to Ghana News Agency, the Director's remarks were part of the phase-two sensitization sessions under the "Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism (PCVE)" project, sponsored by the European Union. The initiative seeks to educate students on the dangers of violent extremism and terrorism, while also preparing them to act as influential leaders within their communities. The sessions provided insights into peacebuilding, social cohesion, and strategies for identifying and countering potential threats, including arms proliferation. Zangina po inted out the disturbing trend of targeted recruitment of youth by extremist groups during election periods, emphasizing the need for vigilance and proactive engagement to prevent radicalization. He urged students to use their positions to foster unity and patriotism, qualities essential for sustaining peace and development in Ghana. Additionally, Mr. George Asare, Regional Commander of the National Investigation Bureau (NIB), reiterated the necessity of community support in combating violent extremism. He encouraged the students to remain observant and to report any suspicious activities to authorities, stressing the importance of their role in safeguarding national security. The NCCE, with support from the EU, continues to focus on empowering students to be positive role models and to resist any involvement in activities that could undermine Ghana's peace and democratic processes.
