Tema: The Electricity Company of Ghana’s Power Queens, Tema Region, in collaboration with management, have held a pre-Fathers’ Day celebration for staff, urging men to take medical checks seriously. The Power Queens (ladies’ association) discussed important issues concerning staff and the ECG during the durbar.
According to Ghana News Agency, the theme for the celebration was ‘The Self-Preserving Man’. Father’s Day is celebrated every third Sunday of June, with this year’s fall on June 15. Ms Emma Aba Amissah, the ECG Power Queens, delivering an address on behalf of the Tema Power Queens President, Madam Anabel Zormelo, said men must take their health seriously.
Ms Amissah conveyed the message that men need to prioritize their health as much as they prioritize their work and financial success. She highlighted the importance of getting tested for prostate and testicular cancers, noting that these conditions are increasingly affecting younger men, even those as young as 15. She emphasized that early detection significantly improves recovery chances, urging men to view health tests as a vital gift to themselves and their communities.
Madam Zita Kyei-Gyamfi, the ECG Tema Management representative for mental health, addressed the issues of stress and suicide prevention. She pointed out that societal norms often pressure men to keep their personal struggles to themselves, a practice she described as unhealthy. She encouraged men to open up, form supportive relationships, and avoid internalizing their problems.
The Power Queens also advocated for staff to wear blue as a symbol of support for men’s health and to commemorate the pre-Father’s Day event. They stressed the importance of mental and physical well-being for productivity and overall health, urging men not to hesitate in seeking help when needed.
