Accra: The government has commissioned a new mini-grid electrification system with a total capacity of 253.26 kilowatts peak (KWP) to provide electricity to three island communities in Ada, located in the Greater Accra Region. This initiative aims to benefit approximately 3,700 residents in the communities of Aflivie, Alorkpem, and Azizakpe within the Ada East District.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Aflivie mini-grid, boasting a capacity of 110 KWP, stands as the largest of its kind in the country. Mr. John Abdullah Jinapor, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, officiated the commissioning of the system, emphasizing its role in delivering consistent electricity to island dwellers while promoting energy equity and inclusion. Sponsored by the Swiss Government under the Ghana Energy Sector Support Project, this facility is expected to stimulate economic and social activities, particularly enhancing the tourism and hospitality sectors.
Mr. Jinapor highlighted that this development contributes to the nation’s efforts to achieve universal electrification access. He noted, “With the addition of about 60 megawatts (MW) of solar projects-10MW at Yendi, and 50MW at the BPA Generating Station this year-Ghana’s renewable energy installed capacity is set to approach 260 MW.”
Furthermore, the Minister mentioned ongoing plans to extend similar electrification projects to another 150 island communities, encompassing a population of approximately 250 residents. These initiatives are part of the global sustainability discourse, aiming to improve health and reduce emissions through renewable energy solutions.
The government plans to illuminate all 200 islands and 2,000 lakeside communities through mini-grid electrification, targeting to serve over 250,000 people in the long term. By 2030, the medium-term goal is to equip more than 150 island communities with advanced mini-grid systems.
Madam Simone Giger, the Swiss Ambassador to Ghana, reaffirmed the Swiss Government’s commitment to sustainable development and economic opportunity enhancement for underserved areas. She stated that her government intends to expand mini-grid initiatives under the Swiss-Ghana Article Six Cooperative Agreement, in alignment with the Paris Agreement.
