Trump Announces South Korea’s Approval to Build Nuclear Submarines

Washington: The United States will allow South Korea to build nuclear-powered submarines, President Donald Trump stated, highlighting the robust defense partnership between the two nations. The announcement was made on Wednesday, emphasizing the alliance's strengthened ties.

According to Ghana News Agency, Trump revealed on his Truth Social platform that the submarines will be constructed in Philadelphia. He mentioned granting approval for South Korea to develop nuclear-powered submarines, which are more advanced than the conventional diesel-powered ones currently in use. However, one of his posts regarding this decision was later removed.

During a meeting on Wednesday, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung requested access to nuclear submarine fuel. Seoul's national security adviser, Wi Sung Lac, indicated that Trump agreed in principle, though further discussions are necessary. The export of nuclear fuel is a sensitive issue due to its potential connection to nuclear weapons, as it involves highly enriched uranium. Nuclear-powered submarines have a strategic edge, capable of remaining submerged for extended periods.

This decision highlights the increasing security cooperation between Washington and Seoul, key allies working to counter China's influence in the Indo-Pacific region. In line with his Asia tour, Trump also committed to enhancing defense and economic ties with Japan.

Moreover, Trump announced South Korea's agreement to provide $350 billion to the United States in return for reduced tariffs on South Korean imports. Seoul clarified that $200 billion would be paid in cash, with the remainder invested in joint shipbuilding ventures. Additionally, Trump stated that South Korean companies and investors would pledge a further $600 billion in U.S. investments.
