Accra: In a significant move to bolster breast cancer awareness and support, The Trust Hospital Company Limited has introduced the Breast Cancer Survivors Support Community. This initiative, launched on October 22, coincides with the hospital's Pink October campaign, focusing on early screening and advocacy. The event was attended by 16 breast cancer survivors, healthcare professionals, corporate clients, and community members. According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative aims to honor the resilience of breast cancer survivors while providing a platform for sharing personal experiences and encouraging those facing similar challenges. Dr. Juliana Oye Ameh, Chief Executive Officer of The Trust Hospital, emphasized the program's focus on both medical and emotional support for women battling breast cancer. She highlighted the importance of creating a community where survivors can rely on one another and share their stories. Survivors at the event shared candid testimonies about their experiences with diagnosi s, treatment, and recovery. A spouse of one survivor discussed how the ordeal strengthened their relationship, illustrating the crucial role of familial support. Another survivor highlighted the importance of early detection, attributing her early diagnosis to regular self-examinations. The release noted that survivors expressed a preference for support over pity, as pity negatively affected their emotional well-being. One survivor, from the Muslim community, advocated for screenings despite religious modesty guidelines, emphasizing the necessity of prioritizing health concerns. Reverend Father Doe, in his sermon, stressed the importance of supporting those facing health challenges, urging participants to offer comfort and peace. Psychologist Rebecca Darko addressed the psychological distress associated with breast cancer, highlighting the need for adaptive coping mechanisms throughout the cancer journey. The support group will engage in outreach programs and educational forums to emphasize early detectio n and breast self-examination. This initiative, the first of its kind at The Trust Hospital, aims to provide a safe space for survivors to share experiences and guide others navigating their cancer journeys. The Trust Hospital reaffirmed its commitment to supporting breast cancer survivors and raising awareness of prevention strategies. With the support of sponsors Prudential Bank and Ase Hair, survivors received packages as tokens of support. The hospital, known for its exceptional healthcare services, continues to lead in comprehensive cancer care and advocacy in Ghana.
