KUMASI: Two brothers have been remanded in custody by the Asante Abuakwa Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality on charges of robbery and theft, with one pleading guilty and the other denying the charges. Their case involves the theft of unrefined gold valued at GHc 120,000.00 from employees of a local mining company. According to Ghana News Agency, Augustine Kofi Owusu, 28, who has pleaded not guilty, has been remanded into prison custody and is scheduled to reappear in court on November 5, 2024. His brother, Kwabena Nsiah, 31, who pleaded guilty, has been remanded into police custody and will return to court on October 31, 2023. A third person, Naomi Bruwaa, 32, facing charges of abetment of crime, has pleaded not guilty and will reappear on November 5, 2023. Another accomplice, Abenaa Pokuaa, is still at large. Police Chief Inspector Ruth Gborson informed the court, presided over by Mrs. Philomina Ansah Asiedu, that the brothers were illegal miners operating at Nweneso Number One. On Oc tober 10, they allegedly ambushed employees of the Fredua Mining Company and stole unrefined gold. Following a report by the company's CEO, Owusu was arrested on October 15. In his statement, Owusu denied involvement, claiming he only assisted his accomplice in collecting payment. He further accused his brother, Nsiah, of stealing GHc 10,000.00 from him. Nsiah admitted to taking GHc 5,100 as part of an alleged practice between the brothers. The police have charged them after investigations.
