Urgent Completion Needed for Abandoned School Block at Udey M/A Basic School

UDEY - The School Management Committee (SMC) of Udey M/A Basic School has issued a strong appeal to the Jasikan Municipal Assembly and the Ghana Education Service:The School Management Committee (SMC) of Udey M/A Basic School has issued a strong appeal to the Jasikan Municipal Assembly and the Ghana Education Service, urging them to finalize the construction of an abandoned school building to enhance the educational environment and ensure the safety of students. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Tijani Musa, the Chairman of the SMC, highlighted the deplorable conditions under which the students are currently studying, noting that the construction project, initiated in 2019 by the then District Chief Executive (DCE) for Buem, Mr. Aziale Lawrence, had been stalled since his departure. Mr. Musa expressed grave concerns about the impact of the unfinished project on student education and safety. Adding to the urgency, Mr. Bismark Yirenkyi, the Assembly member of the old Ayoma Electoral Area, disclosed that the poor state of the school's infrastructure is deterring teachers from accepting postings to the community. He reported that the adverse conditions forced students to leave school early when it rained, disrupting their educational activities. Mr. Yirenkyi also mentioned his attempts to engage Pencils of Promise, a non-profit organization, to assist, but noted that bureaucratic delays had impeded progress. Further details provided by teachers in an interview with the GNA painted a bleak picture of the school's situation, including a lack of basic amenities such as tables and chairs, insufficient learning materials, and the absence of an ICT lab. Teachers also voiced concerns over the absence of teacher accommodations, which they believe contributes to low morale and retention issues, ultimately affecting the quality of education and student performance. The GNA investigation also revealed the logistical challenges faced by teachers and students who had to travel long distances to reach the school, negatively i mpacting punctuality and general well-being. The call for action by the SMC chairman and the concerns raised by teachers and the local assembly member underscore the critical need for immediate intervention to provide a conducive learning environment and attract qualified educators to Udey M/A Basic School.
