Volta: Mr. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, has urged the Regional and District Directors of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to prioritize disaster prevention and reactivation of volunteer groups to bolster preparedness and response capabilities across the region. The call was made during an Orientation and Engagement Programme for the Regional and District NADMO Directors, held in the Conference Room of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Gunu described the engagement as a crucial reminder of the importance of enhancing disaster readiness in the Volta Region, which has recently faced numerous disasters, including rainstorms and tidal waves. He praised NADMO for its dedication and prompt response during emergencies, acknowledging the organization's commitment to safeguarding lives and properties.
'I want to express my appreciation to NADMO for their dedication and responsiveness whenever disaster strikes. Their commitment is commendable, and I urge them to continue in this spirit of service,' the Minister stated. However, Mr. Gunu emphasized the need for NADMO to focus on anticipating risks and preparing in advance, rather than solely managing disasters post-occurrence.
He urged Regional and District Directors to intensify public education and awareness in communities, collaborate closely with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and partner with all stakeholders to ensure effective preventive measures are established. According to him, prevention remains the most effective strategy to minimize loss of life and property during disasters.
The Minister also highlighted the significance of environmental management, advocating for proper land use planning, protection of water bodies, tree planting, and responsible waste management as practical measures to mitigate disaster risks. He noted that early-warning systems and the reactivation of well-trained volunteer groups would enhance community resilience and improve emergency response efforts.
Mr. Gunu acknowledged President John Dramani Mahama's recent sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a sea defense wall in Ketu South, describing it as a significant intervention that would provide lasting relief from the recurrent tidal waves affecting coastal communities. 'Together, with commitment and collaboration, we can safeguard our people and build a safer, more resilient Volta Region,' the Minister affirmed.
The Orientation and Engagement Programme gathered stakeholders to discuss practical ways to enhance disaster preparedness, ensure that volunteer groups are well-resourced, and promote proactive strategies to protect lives and livelihoods.
