Accra: The Volta River Authority (VRA) has organised a workshop for stakeholders on the Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) modules to mitigate any future emergencies. The workshop took place at the Regional Coordinating Council Office in Accra and gathered representatives from key organisations such as the Regional Security Council, some District Chief Executives, and others.
According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Linda Akweley Ocloo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, highlighted the workshop's importance in developing strategies and coordinating the work of various institutions in case of an emergency. She emphasized the EPP as a vital blueprint for response during emergencies at the Akosombo and Kpong hydro plants, noting its annual engagement in potentially affected districts to educate stakeholders, review procedures, test response capabilities, and update records.
Madam Ocloo also underscored the workshops' role in building local capacity and fostering community resilience. She assured VRA of full support in their collaboration with stakeholders to safeguard citizens' lives and properties.
Mr. Francis Abban, Corporate Communications Manager at VRA, mentioned that since 2011, his team has been engaging stakeholders in operational areas through annual workshops to enhance their knowledge. The goal is to ensure stakeholders understand their responsibilities before or during an emergency for better management of the situation.
Mr. Abban clarified that there is no imminent spillage of the Akosombo Dam, but they will keep the public informed about any future need for spillage.
Mr. Dennis Nartey Adjarnor, the Greater Accra Regional National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Director, described the workshop as a productive engagement but urged VRA to keep them updated on Akosombo's water levels to prevent potential disasters. He reiterated NADMO's core mandate of prevention and acknowledged the workshop's alignment with their ongoing efforts with EPP across districts.
