Nkwanta South: Residents of Wajah-Akura, a farming community in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region, are struggling to access basic services due to lack of electricity and mobile network connectivity. Residents have resorted to hanging their phones on trees before accessing signals, highlighting the community’s desperate situation.
According to Ghana News Agency, the absence of reliable communication and power has disrupted daily life, denied access to education and economic opportunities, and discouraged teachers from accepting postings to the community’s only basic school. Mr. Kenneth Kaunda and Madam Kadijatu Atiku, residents of the community, are calling for urgent intervention to address these challenges.
Mr. Joseph Antwi Awal, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkwanta South, acknowledged the issues and says efforts are underway to electrify 17 communities, including Wajah-Akura, under a rural electrification project. He said although the project stalled under the current government, plans are in place to resume it and connect underserved communities to the national grid. The MCE emphasizes that addressing the infrastructure gap is crucial for empowering communities that have been left behind and improving living conditions.
