ACCRA: The World Food Programme (WFP) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) have entered into a partnership aimed at boosting food and nutrition security in Ghana by focusing on youth empowerment and digitalisation. This five-year initiative seeks to leverage digital tools to equip young people with essential skills, promote smart agricultural practices, and encourage healthy lifestyles. According to Ghana News Agency, the agreement is part of a project titled 'Support Youth Economic Empowerment through Digitalization for Resilience in Food and Nutrition Security and Improved Livelihoods.' The project is expected to be implemented over the next five years. At the signing ceremony held in Accra, Aurore Rusiga, Country Director for the WFP, expressed gratitude to KOICA for its contribution of USD 9.3 million towards this initiative. Rusiga emphasized that the program aligns with WFP's focus on changing lives and building resilience within service communities. Rusiga highlighted Ghana's youthf ul demographic, noting that 38 percent of the population is young, and investing in their economic welfare is crucial. She pointed out that the project aims to provide the youth with vital digital skills, promote smart agricultural methods, and utilize technology for healthier lifestyles. She cited research indicating that nutritional investments offer high returns, with every GHS 1.00 invested yielding a return of GHS 3.30. She expressed confidence that combining digitalization with nutritional investments would significantly improve economic and nutritional security in Ghana. Dong Hyun Lee, Country Director of KOICA Ghana, described the partnership as essential, underscoring the role of youth empowerment in fostering economic growth and sustainability. He expressed optimism that digitalisation could drive positive change and contribute to Ghana's progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Lee reiterated the shared commitment of WFP and KOICA to empower the youth through digital innovatio ns to enhance food and nutrition security and improve livelihoods in Ghana. The World Food Programme, with operations in over 120 countries and territories, focuses on enhancing nutrition, supporting smallholder farmers, and helping communities cope with climate-related challenges, among other initiatives. KOICA is a prominent development cooperation agency from Korea, dedicated to supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and promoting global social values.
